Who prepares your study abroad documents: consultancy, writing service, or you

In short
Three parties can touch a study abroad file. A consultancy is paid by the university on enrolment and prepares documents as a means to that end, usually from templates. A writing service is paid by you for the documents and produces the statement, CV and letter of explanation from your record. You, and only you, obtain the academic record, the money file and the identity documents, and only your referees can write recommendations. The honest division of labour follows the money.
The phrase 'we handle all your documents' appears on consultancy pages and writing-service pages alike, and it means something different on each. This post sets out who actually does what, and how each party is paid, because the payment explains the behaviour.
The full list of documents, with who produces and who checks each one, is on the [document preparation](/study-abroad-documents) page.
What a consultancy prepares, and how it is paid
A study abroad consultancy earns a commission from partner universities when a student it referred enrols. That is the service: admission to a partner institution, with the documents prepared along the way. The model is honest when it is disclosed and useful when the partner list includes the programme you would have chosen anyway.
It shapes the documents in two ways. The statement is usually produced from a template, because a counsellor handling sixty files in an intake cannot write sixty from scratch. And the shortlist leans towards partners, because that is where the fee is. Neither is a scandal; both are worth knowing before you hand over the file. Ask which universities on your list pay the consultancy and which do not.
What a writing service prepares, and how it is paid
A writing service is paid by you, per document, and has no stake in where you enrol. It produces the written documents: the statement of purpose or personal statement, the academic CV or resume, and the letter of explanation after a refusal. A good one works from your transcripts, offer letter and a conversation rather than from a form, and checks the finished documents against the rest of the file.
What it does not do is obtain anything. It cannot speed up a transcript, sanction a loan or attest a certificate, and a service that implies it can is selling. Our own prices are published for exactly this reason: a per-document fee with no commission behind it is the whole relationship.
What only you can do
The academic record is issued to you by your university. The money file is issued by your bank, and the loan is sanctioned to you or your sponsor. The passport, the English test and the apostille are in your name and need your signature or presence. And the recommendation letters are the referee's: a letter you wrote and they signed is misrepresentation if discovered, and it reads like one anyway.
Nobody can take these off your list. What a good service does is tell you the order to do them in, which the preparation timeline sets out, and check each one against the statement when it arrives.
| Document | Consultancy | Writing service | You |
|---|---|---|---|
| Statement of purpose | Usually templated | Written from your record | Or written yourself |
| Academic CV or resume | Sometimes | Yes | Or written yourself |
| Letters of recommendation | Often drafted for the referee | Briefs the referee; never writes | Referee writes and signs |
| Transcripts, certificates | Collects copies | Checks against the statement | Obtains from the university |
| Financial file | Advises; may refer a lender | Checks against the funds rule | Obtains from the bank |
| University shortlist | Leans to partners | Not offered | Yours to decide |
Choosing, and using both
Plenty of applicants use a consultancy for the shortlist and the admission mechanics and a writing service for the documents, and that combination works when each knows the other exists. Give the consultancy the finished statement rather than letting it generate one; give the writing service the consultancy's shortlist so the statement names the right programme. What fails is the opposite: two statements, two stories, and a visa officer who notices.
If you are choosing one, choose on the question that matters for you. If the hard part is getting in somewhere, a consultancy with the right partners earns its fee. If the hard part is a record that needs explaining, a gap, a refusal or a change of field, the writing is the work, and that is what a writing service is for.
Related questions
Can a study abroad consultant prepare my SOP?
Most offer to, and most produce it from a template because of the volume they handle. Ask who will write it, whether they will read your transcripts first, and how many revisions you get. A templated statement is the most common reason a committee reads a strong file cautiously.
Is it legal for a service to write my documents?
Writing help on your own statement is normal and is not misrepresentation, in the same way a proofreader is not, provided the facts are yours and you can defend every claim. A recommendation letter written by you or a service in the referee's name is a different matter and can void an application.
Do you take commission from universities?
No. We are paid per document by the applicant, the prices are published, and we have no view on where you enrol.
