Personal statements for UK and Irish applications
A UK personal statement and a US statement of purpose are not the same document with different names. The UK version is more about the subject and less about the department: admissions tutors want evidence that you have engaged with the discipline beyond the syllabus, and they want roughly 80 per cent of the text spent on academic material.
Applicants who submit a repurposed American SOP to a UK course usually spend too long on faculty names and career plans and too little on what they have actually read.
One distinction worth getting right early: a UCAS personal statement is the undergraduate document, written once and sent to every course you apply to, which is why it has to argue for the subject rather than for one department. A postgraduate personal statement goes to a single programme and can be specific. We write both, and the brief asks which one you need before anything is quoted.

What UK admissions tutors count
Super-curricular engagement is the phrase they use internally: reading, lectures, competitions, MOOCs and projects that extend the subject rather than decorating the application. A student who names two books and says something non-obvious about one of them outranks a student who lists nine.
Work experience counts when it is connected to the subject by an argument. Shadowing a physiotherapist matters to a physiotherapy application because of what you observed about patient adherence, not because it happened.

The character limit is not a word limit
UCAS gives 4,000 characters including spaces, across a maximum of 47 lines, which in practice lands near 550 to 600 words. Postgraduate portals vary widely and often silently truncate. We draft to the exact limit of the portal you are using and check the paste-in, because a statement that loses its final sentence to a character cap is a statement with no conclusion.
One statement, several courses
UCAS sends the same statement to every course you apply to. That constrains what you can say: naming one university is a mistake, and so is writing something so general it fits any of the five. The workable version commits hard to the subject and stays silent on the institution.
Postgraduate applications are separate submissions, so course-specific tailoring is not only allowed but expected. The package covers one additional tailored variant; more are quoted per course.

What is the difference between a personal statement and an SOP?
A personal statement, in the UK sense, argues that you are ready for the subject: what you have read, done and understood. A statement of purpose, in the US sense, argues that a specific department is where you should do a specific piece of work, and it names faculty. Sending one where the other was asked for is the most common avoidable error in international applications.
Can I use the same statement for all five UCAS choices?
You have to. UCAS distributes one statement to every choice. That is why the statement should commit to the subject rather than to any single university, and why applying to five loosely related courses with one statement is difficult to do well.
Do you write medicine and law personal statements?
Yes, though both are heavily convention-bound and we will hold you to those conventions. Medicine in particular expects reflective clinical exposure rather than a narrative about wanting to help people.
