5 documents, 5 sets of rules

Each of these is a different argument with a different reader. Pick the one your application asks for, or send us the portal instructions and we will tell you which it is.

Two things decide the price: how much of the document already exists, and how many programmes it has to be tailored to.

What is a statement of purpose?

A statement of purpose is a one-to-two page essay submitted with a graduate application that argues why a specific applicant should be admitted to a specific programme. It covers the academic record that qualifies you, the direction you intend to pursue, the reason this department is the right place to pursue it, and what you plan to do afterwards. It is not a biography and not a restatement of your CV.

What is the full form of SOP?

In an admissions context, SOP stands for Statement of Purpose. The same three letters mean Standard Operating Procedure in business and manufacturing, which is why a general search for "SOP writing" returns process documentation alongside admissions advice. If a university asks for your SOP, it wants the admissions essay.

What is SOP in writing?

In admissions writing, an SOP is the essay in which you make the case for your own admission. It is an argument with evidence, not a personal history: each claim about your ability or direction should be followed by something a reader can check, such as a project, a result, a publication or a piece of work experience.

What is the difference between an SOP and a personal statement?

A statement of purpose is programme-led and a personal statement is subject-led. US and Canadian graduate programmes ask for an SOP: what you want to study, why here, and what you will do with it. UK universities ask for a personal statement: why this subject, evidenced by what you have read and done beyond the syllabus. Sending one where the other was asked for is the most common avoidable error.
