Documents required for a US F-1 student visa

In short

SEVP's Study in the States guidance lists five documents for the F-1 visa interview: "Your original Form I-20 … with ink signature", a "Passport valid for travel to the United States", the "Form DS-160 … confirmation page", the visa application fee receipt where payment is required before the interview, and a photograph meeting US visa photo requirements. The State Department adds that the consular officer may ask for academic records such as transcripts and diplomas, standardized test scores the school required, and evidence of "Financial ability to pay educational, living and travel costs". The I-901 SEVIS fee must be paid before the interview.

The US list is short because the heavy lifting was done when the school issued the I-20: it already holds your transcripts, test scores and financial documents. The interview checks that you are the person in that file and that the money is real.

This is one of seven posts on the documents each destination asks for; the [document preparation](/study-abroad-documents) page sets out who produces each document and the order to start them in.

The interview list, in SEVP's words

From Study in the States, the Department of Homeland Security's student site (its interview post notes that the order of steps varies by embassy), read on 27 October 2026.

  • "Your original Form I-20, 'Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status,' with ink signature." SEVP published guidance on 1 November 2021 on electronic signatures and transmission of the I-20; ask your school which applies.
  • "Passport valid for travel to the United States."
  • "Form DS-160, 'Nonimmigrant Visa Application,' confirmation page."
  • "Department of State visa application fee payment receipt, if you are required to pay before your interview."
  • "Photograph that meets all photograph requirements for a U.S. visa."
  • Proof of payment of the I-901 SEVIS fee, which must be paid before the visa is applied for; the receipt is printed from the SEVIS fee site.

What the officer may ask for

The State Department's student visa page says the consular officer may ask for additional documents, including academic records such as transcripts and diplomas, and standardized test scores required by the US school. SEVP's guidance adds evidence of "Financial ability to pay educational, living and travel costs", and advises bringing copies of the financial documents you gave the school, in the amount shown on your Form I-20. Bring them in a folder in that order; most interviews last a few minutes and the officer asks for one or two items, not all of them.

The documents the school already has

The I-20 was issued after the school accepted your transcripts, your statement of purpose, your test scores and your financial evidence. The interview is read against that file. Where the statement of purpose names a research interest, be ready to talk about it; where the financial documents name a sponsor, be ready to say who they are and why they are paying. The SOP for MS in the USA post covers the statement.

The rule on how long you may stay is in flux: DHS's final rule replacing duration of status with a fixed admission period was blocked by a federal court on 14 September 2026 and, as of 27 October 2026, is not in effect. The duration of status post tracks it.

Order and timing

Receive the I-20 and check every field against your passport. Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee and print the receipt. Complete the DS-160 and print the confirmation. Pay the visa application fee and book the interview; in India, appointment waits vary by post and season, so book the moment the I-20 arrives. Assemble the folder: I-20, passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipts, photo, then transcripts, scores and financial documents.

Related questions

Do I need to bring bank statements to the F-1 interview?

SEVP advises bringing copies of the financial documents you gave the school, in the amount shown on the I-20, because the officer may ask for evidence of your ability to pay educational, living and travel costs. Not every officer asks; every applicant should have them.

Does the I-20 have to be signed in ink?

SEVP's interview guidance says to bring the original Form I-20 with ink signature, and notes separate 2021 guidance on electronic signatures and transmission. Ask your school's designated school official which form of signature your I-20 carries.

When do I pay the SEVIS fee?

After the I-20 is issued and before the visa interview. Keep the receipt; it is part of the interview folder.
