SOP for MS in the USA: what the committee is reading for
In short
US graduate admission happens at department level, not centrally, so the statement is read by faculty in one department against that department's criteria. For thesis-track MS programmes it is a research fit document; for course-based ones it is a preparation and outcome document. Writing the first kind for the second kind is the most common structural error.
An MS application to a US university is read by a small committee of faculty who will teach you. They are assessing readiness, not enthusiasm, and they have already seen your grades and test scores elsewhere in the file.

Find out whether the programme is thesis or course-based
A thesis-track MS is closer to a doctoral application: name two or three faculty whose recent papers you have read, state a problem, and evidence that you can work on it. A course-based MS is a professional qualification, and a research-heavy statement reads as a misunderstanding of what you applied to.

The fit paragraph is where US applications are won and lost
Reputation is not fit. Naming the ranking, the campus or the diversity of the student body wastes the most valuable 20 per cent of the document, and every committee has read those sentences several hundred times.

Where Indian applicants commonly lose ground
Three patterns recur. A CV rewritten as prose, which tells the committee nothing it did not already have. A percentage-to-GPA conversion left unexplained, when a line about the scale would settle it, see CGPA to GPA conversion. And a plan that stops at graduation, which leaves the reader unable to say what the degree is for.
If your record has a weak semester or a gap, place it in the second half in two sentences and follow it with evidence, as set out in writing an SOP with a low GPA.

How long should an SOP for MS in the USA be?
Usually 500 to 1,000 words, or one to two pages single-spaced, but the department's stated limit overrides any general rule and varies between departments in the same university. Where a programme gives specific questions instead of a general prompt, answer those questions in that order.
Should I contact professors before applying for an MS?
For thesis-track programmes it is often worth it, because supervisor interest can influence both admission and funding. For course-based MS programmes it rarely helps and occasionally hurts, since admission is committee-run against published criteria and unsolicited email is simply noise.
