Also called PC, provisional degree certificate

What is a provisional certificate?

A provisional certificate is the interim document a university issues after you complete a degree, confirming you have qualified for it, while the printed degree certificate is still being prepared. It is accepted by almost every foreign university and credential evaluator in place of the final degree certificate, which in Indian universities can take a year or more to be issued.

Who needs a provisional certificate?

Any recent graduate applying abroad before their consolidated degree certificate has been issued.

How do I get a provisional certificate?

  • Apply through your college office, which forwards the request to the university
  • Carry your final-semester mark list and the fee receipt
  • Expect one to four weeks depending on the university and the time of year

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a college-issued course completion letter is the same thing; most universities want the university-issued provisional
  • Applying in the month after results, when every graduate in the state is applying at once
  • Not requesting extra attested copies while you are already at the counter
