What is a motivation letter?

A motivation letter is the German equivalent of a statement of purpose, and it is a shorter, more formal document: conventionally one page of roughly 400 to 600 words, laid out as a business letter with an addressee, a subject line and a signature. It is read for coherence between your completed coursework and the programme's requirements, not for narrative.

Common mistakes

  • Sending a two-page American-style essay
  • Writing in English to a German-taught programme, which undercuts your claimed C1
