What is IELTS?
IELTS is an English proficiency test scored from 0 to 9 in four sections, accepted by universities and visa authorities across the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. Universities and visa routes set separate minimums, and the visa minimum is often the harder of the two because it applies to each section rather than the overall band.

Who needs IELTS?
Most applicants without a recognised English-medium degree, and many with one where the visa route requires a test regardless.
Common mistakes
- Meeting the overall band but missing a section minimum
- Booking the Academic test when the route required UKVI IELTS, or the reverse
- Assuming an MOI certificate removes the visa requirement
