Visas
Documents required for an Irish study visa

In short
Indian nationals need a long-stay (D) study visa for a course longer than three months, applied for online up to three months before the date of travel, with original documents and a full translation of anything not in English or Irish. The file is built around the letter of acceptance from the college, evidence that fees have been paid, evidence of immediate access to at least €10,000 for living costs for the year in addition to fees, English language evidence, private medical insurance, your academic history, a letter of application in your own words, and a passport valid for at least 12 months beyond arrival.
Ireland's list is a conventional one; what trips applicants is the money rule, which asks for immediate access to a fixed sum rather than a bank balance of any size, and the letter of application, which is read as a credibility document.
This is one of seven posts on the documents each destination asks for; the [document preparation](/study-abroad-documents) page sets out who produces each document and the order to start them in.
What ISD's guidance states
Immigration Service Delivery's study pages (the long-term study visa page is dated 23 September 2024) state that a study visa is for courses longer than three months, that you can apply for a study visa up to three months before your date of travel to Ireland, that original documents must be provided, and that a document not in English or Irish must be accompanied by a full translation. ISD's pages are rendered in a way that cannot be captured for quotation here, so the document list below is given as the long-stay study visa guidance sets it out rather than quoted line by line; read the live page before you apply.
- Passport valid for at least 12 months after your intended arrival, and copies of previous passports.
- Letter of acceptance from the college, confirming the course, its duration, fees, and that fees have been paid or how much.
- Evidence of fees paid to the college, or a receipt for the amount paid where the college allows staged payment.
- Evidence of finances: immediate access to at least €10,000 for living costs for the first year in addition to fees, with ready access to the same amount for each further year; bank statements for the preceding six months.
- English language evidence, usually IELTS or an accepted equivalent, unless the course is in another language.
- Private medical insurance; the college may arrange it, in which case the letter of acceptance says so.
- Academic history: degree certificates, transcripts, and an explanation of any gap between the last study and the course applied for.
- A letter of application in your own words: why this course, why Ireland, your plans afterwards, and an undertaking to observe the visa's conditions.
- Two passport photographs, and details of any previous visa refusals for any country.
The €10,000 and where it sits
Irish rules ask visa-required students for evidence of immediate access to at least €10,000 for courses beginning after 1 July 2023, described as the estimated cost of living for one academic year, in addition to course fees, with ready access to the same amount for each subsequent year. For courses under eight months the figure is €833 per month of stay or €6,665, whichever is lower. The money is read against six months of statements, so it has to have been there, and a sponsor's funds need the sponsor's documents behind them.
Two statements, one story
Irish colleges ask for a personal statement for admission; ISD asks for a letter of application for the visa. They are read by different people for different questions, and both are checked against each other and against the finances. The Ireland page covers the two documents; the rule is the same as everywhere else in this series: one account of your record, told identically.
Order and timing
Pay the fees early, because the letter of acceptance that ISD wants is the one confirming payment. Keep the €10,000 in an account whose six-month history is clean. Arrange insurance through the college if it offers it. Apply as soon as the window opens, three months before travel, because processing for Indian applications runs to several weeks in intake season.
