How to write an SOP when you have been working for years
The short answer
Convert the experience into evidence of academic readiness rather than listing it as employment. A committee is assessing whether you can be taught at this level, so what matters is the problem you kept running into at work, what you tried, where your current knowledge ran out, and why this programme is what closes that gap.
The trap: writing a job application
Experienced applicants default to the register they know: responsibilities, teams managed, targets hit. That is a cover letter, and it argues you can already do the work rather than that you are ready to be taught.
The exception is an MBA, where trajectory and quantified outcomes genuinely are the argument. For every other programme, translate.
Find the moment your knowledge ran out
The strongest experienced statements turn on a specific problem the applicant could not solve with what they knew. A model that failed in production, a process that kept breaking, a clinical situation the protocol did not cover.
That moment does two things at once: it evidences competence and it explains the application. It is also, usually, the honest answer to why you are applying now rather than three years ago.
Do not let the degree go stale
A committee reading a 2016 transcript wants to know the academic muscle is still there. Any recent course, certification, published work or self-directed study belongs in the document, briefly, as evidence you can still sit an exam.

It can change how the record is read, particularly where the work is directly relevant and recent, but it does not move you past a stated entry requirement. The most effective use is showing that current capability exceeds what an old transcript suggests.
