Also called Graduate Record Examination

What is the GRE?

The GRE is a standardised test of verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing used in US graduate admissions. A growing number of programmes have made it optional since 2020, and whether it helps you depends on whether the rest of your file needs a quantitative signal.

Reviewed

Who needs the GRE?

Applicants to US programmes that still require or recommend it, and applicants whose academic record would benefit from a strong quantitative score.
