What the statement has to argue at Russell Group universities
The document is different, not just shorter. A UK personal statement is subject-led: why this subject, evidenced by what you have read and done beyond the syllabus. Around four fifths of it should be academic, which is a higher proportion than a US statement of purpose carries.

One-year taught master's programmes are the norm here, which compresses everything. A statement that treats the year as preparation for something specific afterwards reads far better than one that treats it as an end in itself.
