Genuine Student Requirement

Also called GS, GTE, Genuine Temporary Entrant
What is the genuine student requirement?
The Genuine Student requirement is the test Australia's Department of Home Affairs applies to student visa applicants, replacing the older Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement from March 2024. Applicants answer a set of targeted questions about their circumstances, why this course and provider, their understanding of studying in Australia, and their plans afterwards, rather than submitting one open-ended statement.

Common mistakes
- Answering as though the old GTE 'intention to return' framing still applies
- A course choice that does not follow from your academic or work record, left unexplained
- Contradicting the SOP you sent the university
