Australia asks for two statements, and applicants send one
In short
An Australian application needs two separate documents. The university wants a statement of purpose of roughly 500 to 800 words about academic fit. The visa application separately requires a Genuine Student statement of about 1,000 to 1,500 words addressed to the Department of Home Affairs, answering whether you genuinely intend to study and comply with your visa conditions.
Conflating the two is the most common Australian application error we see, and it usually shows up as an academic statement submitted to a visa officer who was asking something else entirely.

Two readers, two questions
The university's admissions team asks whether you can do the coursework and whether the programme fits your record. The Department of Home Affairs asks whether you are a genuine student: whether the course makes sense for you, whether you can fund it, and whether you understand and intend to comply with your visa conditions.
A document that answers the first question well will not answer the second, and submitting it to both is why applicants with good offers still get refused.

Your circumstances in India, your academic and employment history including any gaps, why this course and this provider rather than a comparable one at home, how the course is funded, and what you intend to do afterwards.

Length and register
The visa statement runs longer than the university one and is more factual in register; it is a document of record, not a piece of persuasion. Answer each element the requirement lists, in order, with specifics.
The university statement stays a statement of purpose and follows the usual six-part structure.

Is the Genuine Student statement the same as the old GTE?
The Genuine Student requirement replaced the earlier Genuine Temporary Entrant test, and the practical document is similar but the framing changed. Write to the current published requirement rather than to an older GTE template, and check the Department of Home Affairs guidance rather than a third-party sample.
How long should a Genuine Student statement be?
Usually 1,000 to 1,500 words, considerably longer than the university statement of purpose, because it must address your circumstances, course choice, funding, any gaps or refusals, and your intentions after the course. Each element the requirement names should be answered explicitly.
